Who is Dorothy Thorpe?

Lucite napkin rings. orange. pretzel. Dorothy Thorpe style. set of four

My love of lucite is no secret. It goes hand in hand with my affinity for designers who use it as a design element, ultimately they are designing in the "there and not there" of the material.

I found these groovy lucite knots at a recent estate sale. I first thought about making them into stations on a necklace, but decided to do some research first. I was pretty sure they were napkin rings and I had a vague memory of a 1930's designer who worked in home accessories in lucite. It turned out the name that kept popping up was Dorothy Thorpe- be it sites about her, her work, or her works faked. I have no idea if these are her actual work. I do know the are in her style.

Dorothy Thorpe was raised and educated in Utah  in the early part of the 20th century. She moved to California in her late 20's. It was there that she designed her tableware, barware and all around delicious things to serve delicious things from and on!

Hallmarks of her works include:

These candle holders recently sold in my Etsy shop... but I love them so I had to add!
Dorothy Thorpe's work us often marked with her initials or a label. However, since most people remove labels after they purchase an item, the labels are often gone on those pieces. When in doubt, do your research on the piece and purchase with that knowledge. If it seems legit, then pay appropriately. If it seems dodgy and you have "that feeling" that something's no quite right, buy low or walk away.

Hanna Antiques (2424 7th Ave S)- last days of the sale

We are in the final stretch of the BIG sale at Hanna Antiques! I have added a few new things to the shop and marked down about 10 more items. I am ready to see some more movement and make more room for the back to school and back to college crowd- then it is on to the holidays shopping season.

Here is my new desk! Campaign desk that is and it is glorious. I sat down at it to write out the sale tags and wondered why I did not keep it! Best of all, it is currently 25% off, bringing it to $900. The base is sturdy, albeit a bit battle scarred (not real battle scars mind you, it is not actually from the turn of the century... more like the 1980's).

I have also added some of the steamboat Southern Comfort glasses to by Mid Century Bar!

More Southern Comfort glasses on the newly marked down barley twist gaming table.

Over all, you can see my newly picked french country writing design, a oh-so-comfortable armchair, and the newly marked down mid century side tables!

Many of the dealers have brought in new items and made additional mark downs, as I have! It is time to shop for yourself, you new college student, your first time apartment dweller, your holiday list!

New in the shop- porch and parlor on Etsy

I have been super busy this month so far- from the BIG sale at Hanna Antiques, doing good shopping, and taking new clients! However, I am taking a breather between packing items for shipping to post some new items in the shop both local and online at porchandparlor.etsy.com

Locally, I have sold a number of items at Hanna's the biggest was a lovely gold settee. I replaced it with this country French Provencal desk.

These images are from the sale where I purchased the desk and not my own images... or my styling.

Enamel on silver plate- Reed and Barton serving ware

I have found my second Reed and Barton enameled silver plate serving piece. I love the Mid Century Modern style from the 1960's! It just glows.
Vintage cobalt blue enamel on silver plate from Reed and Barton. 1960s. Mid Century Modern
Cobalt Enamel bowl Reed and Barton Special PD24 on Etsy
The piece below sold about a month ago... but was a handsome devil!

These pieces are lovely with the glowing enamel over the silver plate and were only made during the 1960's. I have never seen a bowl like the top image with the band of silver around the rim of the bowl, usually the enamel comes right to the edge without a lip to the piece. Perhaps that is why it is marked "special" on the bottom!

If you are interested in purchasing the bowl at the top, please click on the link below the image to take you to my Etsy vintage store!
