The early week's scores- shopping for tables

As you know from my previous shopping post, I scored on some lighting from a local company that is moving to a new site.

Well... I kept thinking about the tables that I saw at the sale...

and how pretty they were...

 and how there might be still some left at the end of the sale.


So, I went back yesterday and grabbed this handsome table at the left.


Then there were these pretty gold tables with antique mirror tops. Grabbed a pair!



And, I thought, "while I am here..." my famous last words as they always cost me money! I picked up a lamp and a sisal rug.

Mid Century Madness! Fine furniture galore

This weekend I could not stop running into fantastic Mid Century furniture. Some of it, I am now the proud owner of... until it hits my stores. Then, it can be yours. Of course you can always contact me to for purchase info.

What a fantastic coffee table! Black metal bars pass through the stone and support the glass top. I didn't buy it, but I'd love to own it.

I would love to see it with some great intense pastel stripe- lime, orchid, turquoise, orange, etc

Gorgeous Barovier and Toso (unmarked) glass and marble lamp. Once you get past the fact that with this shade it is about 42 inches tall. You see the lovely details.
 

Beautiful blown glass body with the clear bubbles that spiral across the reverse teardrop shade, topped with a hand carved white marble.

Fave of the weekend picking... Hollywood Regency lamp- understated

Though I love the new desk that I just added to the shop... which I stalked, plotted, staked out and woke up really early for, this lamp is my favorite pick. I don't know who made it; I have no history on it. It is just good design in a solid Hollywood Regency package.

Love the black shade on the white ceramic base and the scale of the shade. Nice pagoda shape, bas-relief bells, or maybe it is tassels, and the faux bamboo details. The two bulb lamp has parallel sockets, which allows for the shallow shade.

Who is Paul Hanson?

Lately, I have found some fantastic mid-century modern lamps by the maker Paul Hanson. I love the contemporary lines, the intricate details, and the monumetality of the size. But, who is he? What is the story of these lamps?

The Paul Hanson Lighting Company began in the 1920's and as a collectible today as then. Their appeal lies in the quality of the materials- porcelains, high quality wood, marble, bronze and brasses. They were created using molds as well as cast metal in a lost wax process. This process is based on carving a form from wax and burying the wax form in sand. Then the bronze, or other metal, is then poured into the sand and the wax is burnt away with the metal filling the void left, thus making the casting. It is an expensive process reserved for art pieces.

The most collectible of  Paul Hanson lamps are from the Hollywood Regency style and the Chinoiserie styles from the 1940's through 1960's. The style hallmarks include detailed pierced work, Mid-century modern geometric lines, and more traditional styles of retro-fitted porcelain vessel shapes with Asian inspired painting and classical lines in glass or brass.

... then I used the incantation, "scourgify"!

Finding great objects, accessories, and furnishings at an estate sale satifies the thrill of the chase, but it is not the end of the story. It would be great to be able to "pick" a sales then immediately put it back out for sale with a small finders fee. However, many times...well, most of the time... 95% of the time, really... you have add a heaping helping of elbow grease and some cleaning know-how. 

Take the lovely Paul Hanson Lamp with the oh-so-stylish lattice-work base. Pretty, stylish, and a TOTAL sticky dirt magnet. Every top edge of the lattice edge was filled with sticky dirt, as in not vacuum-able, not to mention the crevices of the base and the edges.

So, since this is glazed white ceramic, it is basically glass... for cleaning purposes, or course. So, with a light weight glass cleaner- with no dyes- and many cotton swabs, I went to town on every edge, crevice, and flat plane with Mrs. Meyers window cleaner in lavender... be case lavender is my fave small. Always choose un-dyed cleaners. If there are light cracks or crazing in the glazing, the dyes can deposit in the crazing and draw attention to the cracks.

And then I used the incantation, "scourgify" with my magic cotton swab wand.

It is always best to start with the least of the cleaners and more work on your part, than a harsh cleaner with light work on your part. You want to clean, but not damage. And remember, some patinas are important to not only the value but aesthetic of the piece. When in doubt, do a little research by searching on Ebay, Etsy, and Pinterest for what you are debating to see what the current trend is.

Pickin' and a Grinnin'- part two

I told myself that I would not go back to the estate sales today... that I should not... that I've spent enough... that perhaps that Monkey Lamp is still there. No no, back up there... that I should not go!

Then I remembered that I need a pillow form for the Monkey pillow from yesterday, and I was already headed to the car with one thought in mind- Monkey Lamp. I mean, pillow form.

And, while I was checking on the Monkey Lamp, I might as well go to the other sale that I missed yesterday. right?

Oh, well, I did find more things to love and I did eventually get the pillow form! Here are today's picks and a few from earlier this week. I need to do some clean-up, rewiring, new lamp shade, but these are all winners.

Love this collapsible table with brass trays. I think I need to darken the legs, maybe.

Glass top tables are quite hard to photograph... especially against a stack of old suitcases. However, great table, great lines! And hot, not brass!

 I love vintage cameras and this is a really cool one with a "garage door" that slides up to reveal the view port on top and the lenses on the front. Comes in original leather case... though the front panel of the case is missing.

Emerald Green- the Pantone color of the year

Emerald green will be everywhere this year with being the Pantone color of the year and the new Wizard of Oz movie coming out- Oz the Great and Powerful.

Green is a great color for the home because the colors in nature are so easy to bring inside and you simply have to open a drapes to duplicate the color!

Home Office-English style- Turquoise and Chocolate

For my weekly room design, I have taken the home office from my last post (image from country living) and as inspiration for a home office.  It's soft, romantic, and looks highly functional!
