Trend spotting- color in 2014

I have always loved trend spotting- be it for color, style, or trinket! In going though the trade magazines, I started to notice the many shades of yellow and it is a natural progression from the oranges in the past few years... though I still get compliments of my orange hand bag at least once a week since I purchased it about five years ago. (Perhaps it is time for a new handbag after five years of hard labor!)

Back to yellow. Sure there are signal yellow home accessories out there (see below), but they are sometimes hard to bring into an already designed space. They tend to look very graphic. So if you space if stark black and white, contemporary, or low on "knick- knackery", they might be just for you.

However, if you have a "traditional" space, stark yellow can be a bit harsh. There is still a yellow for you Trad' folks as well!

Then, for those who would like a little yellow, but just cannot do YELLOW, there is yellow metals a.k.a. brass and gold. Always a great way to add warmth to a space. Especially great for the contemporary spaces that can look cold!

Picks from this weekend- animals and nature

Are you a Georgia Bulldog fan? Love gnomes? Understand the luck that Koi fish can bring you? Well you should have been picking with me this weekend. But never fear, you can still have any of these! I'm selling and shipping.

Here's my picks from this weekend... so far!

Fitz and Floyd bulldog bookends from 1976. Fan-tastic!

Brass koi fish, needs a bit of polishing... which is my favorite thing for do. Nothing like it for job reward!

I think Ashford and Simpson were singing about these brass dogwood bookends. They are "solid as a rock" and heavy as one as well.

"Gernumblies Forestsi" for the Harry Potter Fans or Forest Gnome for the Tom Clark fans. Love this 10 inch gnome from 1983 and part of the Tom Clark Gnome series. He just seems perfect for this time of year!

If you are interested in any of these items, please contact me via the social buttons at the top of the page. Soon, they will be in my Etsy store, or available locally in my stall at Interiors and Antiques in the Vestavia Hills, AL area.

New in the shop- elephant and tiger go head to head

I'm not a football fan... even though I live in Alabama. However, over the past couple of weeks I have stumbled upon a handsome brass elephant and an equally brass tiger. So for football season, here is my homage to football in the state of Alabama. Please click on the link to take you to the listing on the item on line!

New items in the shop- The back to school edition

Just added a fantastic desk (vintage Drexel), vintage luggage train rack, end table/ nightstand (also vintage Drexel) and did some fluffing. Here's the new vignettes.

A study in cream and light sage- pretty cream chair (actually a pair is available), fantastic nightstand with a custom cut glass top, a brass lamp that sold for twice my price on One King's Lane, and the vintage brass luggage rack from a train that is storing pillows.

Lovely vintage French Provincial writing desk from Drexel. Nice desk with a little brass rail that surround the back. I added a vintage Drexel side chair and an awesome vintage typewriter.

For the details of the space-

Vintage side tables for Bromberg's Studios. They used to have custom furniture made of them. There are a pair of these tables and they are weighted- a well thought out design feature.

Really nice end table of nightstand from Drexel. A great shade of creamy same with gold detailing. It's the best of neo-rococo from the 1950's. I think the glass top, custom shaped, is a very nice high end detail.

Brass luggage rack from a train would work well in a kitchen/ mud room for holding hats, bags, coats. etc. Or, it would be great in a bathroom to hold towels.

It even comes with extra hooks which fit on the top rails.

All of these items are currently available at Interiors and Antiques in Vestavia Hills... in the old Ethan Allen building! Great location, tons of ideas.

Now, what does all this have to do with back to school? The desk is a great study area, the night stand is a great way to update a child's bedroom and offer storage for books, kindles, etc. and the Train luggage rack, I think would be a great gift for mom to keep the jacket's and other cold weather gear from piling up at the back door!

My super fave shopping purchase

Sometimes you find a real treat when shopping... something you need to hold on to for a while... you don't know why, it just speaks to some part of you. My current talker is a pair of altar candlesticks. Brass and bronze with gold gilt. Elegant, historic looking... awesome.

Brass is the hottest trend for warming up your interiors

Brass is the IT metal this season. It's great to warming up those cool greys. I like to mix it with other metals- silver, iron, copper. As a metal that patinas readily, there are so many tones to choose. Once you find the one you like, simply seal it with a light coat of wax!

Here are some of my recent acquisitions in brass! You can find them at Interiors and Antiques in Vestavia Hills.

Here are some great finds from the web with mixed metals-
